Biography of an Artist & Weaver
Gloria Hanson has lived in Vernon since 1977. She continued her
Fine Art studies at Okanagan University College, concentrating on painting
and printmaking. In the ensuing years, she has been a practicing visual
artist, art gallery curator, and, more recently, fiber artist.
In 1983, a beginner's course in weaving changed the direction of her
creativity. Many courses and much reading later, Gloria has become an
accomplished weaver, spinner and dyer and workshop instructor.
When not creating, she delights in teaching others, sharing with
both beginner and intermediate, the skills that bring her so much
pleasure and satisfaction. Gloria enjoys teaches a variety of courses in
spinning, dyeing, weaving and knitting. Her interest is always in the
process of creating. Getting a beautiful, wearable garment is just a
bonus.
When Gloria knits a sweater, or weaves a blanket, she usually
starts with an idea, a colour inspiration and the raw fleece. She then
prepares the fleece, dyes and spins the yarn before picking up knitting
needles or going to the loom. Her work is recognized by her imaginative
use of colour. Her handspun sweater "Reflections on Vancouver" was
selected as a finalist in the Great Vancouver Sweater Competition. The
thread that runs through all of her work - painting, knitting, or weaving -
is that of colour.
In 1999, Gloria completed, with honors, a Diploma of Fine Art from
OUC.
You can see her work at many of the juried craft fairs in the
Okanagan Valley and the Lower Mainland.
