Greg's pottery

When Greg was 12 years old, living in Victoria, British Columbia, he was intrigued by some clay he found in the woods. "I buried half of a car rear end into the ground and with an electric motor on the drive shaft end, created a makeshift potter's wheel. From there I tried to centre a ball of clay. The clay flew off the wheel and I thought, "Well, that didn't work!" He doesn't remember from where he got the idea.

It was 10 years later at Whitehorse, in the Yukon, that Greg took his first course at the YMCA. He was living in an old miner's cabin and set up his first studio in a wall tent outside. Three years later he moved to Alberta and took a second pottery course at Red Deer. He then went on to work at Stonecrop in Canmore, Alberta.

Greg returned to B.C.; living in the Okanagan and working as a tree faller. He kept pottery as a hobby and during this time built and fired a wood kiln with friend and fellow potter, Larry MacGregor. The kiln was 30 cubic feet and they chopped kindling for weeks in preparation. Greg worked in the bush for 17 years until deciding in 1996 to make his living from his pottery.

"I enjoy being able to dedicate my time to my pottery; always learning and improving. I've always made utilitarian pottery because I like making pots that will be used and enjoyed. The response from our customers has given me great satisfaction."

Greg fires his pots in a 20 cubic feet gas kiln which he built adjacent to his studio at his home in Cherryville, B.C. He operates his pottery business with his wife Debbee, organizer of the Cherryville Festival of the Arts. They are regular vendors at the Vernon & Kelowna farmers' markets and show and sell Greg's work throughout the year at many high quality Okanagan shows.
