Mural In A Weekend April 2001
By Local Artists

Lumby & District Chamber of Commerce Mural Committee
& Monashee Arts Council - Local Artists &
Mural Artist Michelle Loughery

October 18th 2000 Mural Project Update

Next meeting November 18th
The next meeting for the Mural In A Weekend Project is planned for November 18th, Saturday 9 am, Location Whitevalley Resource Center.

A special thanks to Gary Whitley who has taken over the task of spearheading a Sub Committee on the Mural in a Weekend Project, in conjunction, with the Mural Committee - Lumby & District Chamber of Commerce. Mike Cripps has had to resign due to workload. Mike will stay on board as one of the participants for this project. Thank you Mike for all the support you have given and welcome aboard to Gary.

Gary Whitley is a world-renowned artist living at Cherryville BC. In 1985 Gary earned A.F.C.A. status with the Federation of Canadian Artists, Canada's society of professional artists. Few have obtained this recognition. Gary is also a member of the Monashee Arts Council. His love for art, infectious enthusiasm and outgoing personality keep his teaching calendar booked well in advance. Gary is enthused to be working with our local artists in this fun filled weekend and to be able to work alongside of Mural Artist Michelle Loughery.

Monthly gatherings and group session meetings will be held prior to April to set the stage for this special occasion. The finalizing and painting of this mural is planned for April of 2001.

All artists who are interested in being a part of this occasion and/or who have ideas for a submission of what you would like to see the Mural In A Weekend represent are asked to bring them to the meeting planned for November. Contact Kathy Deane at 547-2281 if you need further information.

The Mural size is planned to be 8 X 32, painted with exterior latex paint, on prepared Crezone Board. (Preparation application will be discussed at the November/December Meeting)

A variety of locations are being looked at for this mural project. Currently the Frontier Video wall is an appealing prospect as this leads into the sculpture park area and would give excellent exposure to the oncoming traffic from the west.

Artist Mural In A Weekend submission(s) should contain:

  • Title Page
  • Theme - story /history
  • Title Size / location
  • Artist name and reference
  • Artist Biography and Exposure
  • Sample of Artists previous work
  • Proposed Submission(s) Concept and Mockup of presentation

Please leave you presentation(s) at the Lumby and District Chamber of Commerce Attention - Kathy Deane Mural Committee Project - or bring directly to the meeting being held in November.

From the submissions presented in November ideas for what we want to see represented on our Mural In A Weekend will become more solidified. This meeting will be a fun time of presenting all the ideas that have been brought forth. Gary Whitley will lead us with taking our ideas and laying them out in different presentations.

Kathy Deane, (Mural Manager & Coordinator), Maureen Thompson (Assistant and local Historian) and Gary Whitley (Monashee Arts Council Rep & local artists rep) will prepare the submissions for presentation with Mural Artist Michelle Loughery.

Michelle is planning a day of pre mural training for all Artists who wish to be part in the Mural In a Weekend event on December 2nd, 10Am to 4PM. (Location TBA). During this special day the mural theme will be incorporated. If time allots, prep work will start for the mural. If you have questions you would like answered for this training day please prepare and present them at the November 18th Meeting so they can be incorporated into the December training day schedule.

The Mural Committee, will supply; paint, board, glue, glaze, primer, filler, sand paper, some brushes, and other materials required for the painting of the mural. Due to the amount of artists participating the Mural Committee does request that you bring old paintbrushes, rags and anything you do have on hand that would help cut down costs.

The Mural Committee has made the agreement with the Monashee Arts Council that all Artists who are participating in the Mural In A Weekend Project will donate their work, In Kind Contribution, and the copyrights of the Mural In A Weekend will belong to the Chamber Mural Committee.

The Mural Committee is currently looking into grant funding and donations for this specific project. At the September Monashee Arts Council Meeting it was agreed that should funding be raised for this specific project the material expenses would be paid first. If after expenses paid there are a balance of funds left over, then ½ of the monies would go towards the Monashee Arts Council and the other 1/2 would stay in the Mural Committee fund.

This Mural In a Weekend project is believed that it will do many things for our artists and our community:

  • Attract business
  • Draw tourist
  • Revitalize the community and instill pride
  • Esthetically appealing
  • Promote the validity of our local artists
  • Visually give local residents and travelers the opportunity to see what the artists have accomplished thus giving the artists an opening of showing further work for sale. Artist Brochures could be left at the Chamber Booth.
  • Promotion of the mural and reference to the artists who participated in the Mural in Weekend will be presented, on the following, on behalf of the Lumby and District Chamber of Commerce Mural Committee
    • postcards
    • in magazine and newspaper articles
    • on web sites and
    • in the future other forms of promoting will be incorporated

The idea for the Mural In a Weekend came from a little town in Toppenish Wa US. Once a year their Artists get together along with the supervision of a Mural Artist and paint a mural in a day to promote themselves and their town. To date, eight Mural-in-a-Day projects have been completed.

Toppenish states, " the Mural-in-a-Day is a totally unique concept: a full-sized mural painted in one day by a talented team of artists and accomplished all by volunteer help." This includes artists, carpenters, electricians, farmers, students, retirees, police officers, firefighters, city officials, professionals, volunteers, and business people serving the community, all serving the community revitalization. These public minded residents responded generously to the Toppenish needs in a variety of ways. Erecting scaffolding for artists working on high walls, giving companionship and accommodations to the artists, providing walls for murals, paying for the costs associated with preparing the wall for a mural, and the loaning of equipment are just a few of the examples.

Many different perspectives on the purpose of producing the Mural In A Weekend for Lumby have been discussed but whether it is to attract business, draw tourists, or revitalize the community---all will agree that the most important reason is to bring back a sense of pride to Lumby.

If you want to be a part of this special weekend and can help out in someway please contact Kathy Deane at 547-2281.
