Branch #167 - Lumby BC Canada |
| Welcome to the Lumby Legion's Home Page |
|
Branch #167 was built in 1947 for roughly $20,000 and many, many hours of volunteer labour. Selling debentures raised the money. The property chosen for the building was the corner of Shuswap Avenue and Miller Street, where it still is located. It was bought off of Sam Derry for $250. John Kirchsteiger built the cenotaph in the later part of 1948. It stood in front of the Legion to the right of the front door, which fast east. In 1976-1978, when the Legion made preparations to enlarge the hall, the cenotaph was moved to the Community Park, where it presently sits and where the Remembrance Day Parade ends. The first bar was built on the south side of the lounge in the downstairs of the hall. As there was not a safe, the money had to be stashed in a tin, hidden in the bar and taken home at the end of the night by the steward. Before the hall was built, meetings were held in an old livery stable, the Catholic Parish Hall and the Ormsby Hall. The first meetings had members bringing their own chairs, and if they could afford it, two chairs. Benches and long tables where made for banquets. Many over the years have utilized the Legion hall. Local clubs and organizations have rented the hall for bazaars, dances, meetings, weight-loss programs, flea markets, bingos, etc. The Wild Life Association of Lumby has held meetings and banquets; youth groups (such as the Girl Guides, and Boy Scout groups) have had use of the hall rent-free. The hall has been also used for annual children’s Christmas parties, many Branch funerals and teas, and is available to have personal dances and events. Contact the Legion for more information. Presently the legion has Bingo, Darts, and Pool nights and a busy Saturday afternoon Meat draw. Dances and other events are also held throughout the year; keep on eye out for them! Behind the scenes of a well-run legion, is the Ladies Auxiliary. These ladies are family members of Legion Members, past and present. They do catering, Poppy and Wreath sales, run the concession during the FUNTASTICS Summer Tournaments, and put on the weekly Bingo nights. Want to know more? Contact them by clicking here. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #167 has sponsored many local events and groups. They sponsor the Lumby 4-H Calf Club, the Miss Lumby Queen Excellence Program and many more. The legion also presents a Charles Bloom Grad with a scholarship or bursary every year. The beginning of November every year sees the Ladies Auxiliary and other Branch members out selling poppies and wreaths, with Guides/Brownies and local businesses helping out. One of the main goals of the Branch is to have safe, comfortable, friendly environment for the growing population of our veterans and seniors in our town. The legion continues to aid the veterans and their families when emergencies arise or when a little something is hard to get. Transient veterans have also been given help by the Branch paying room and board for them while they visited our community. The Royal Canadian Legion would like to thank the public for the generous support they have received, as it does benefit everyone in the community, not just the veterans. We welcome all to the Service of Remembrance at the cenotaph in the Lumby Community Park every November 11th. |
